The Teacher within

Joseph Conrad has the narrator observe, in his 1899 novel “The Heart of Darkness”: “The mind of man is capable of anything—because everything is in it, all the past as well as all the future.”

In “The Life of Shabkar: The Autobiography of a Tibetan Yogin” (translated by Matthieu Ricard, Jakob Leschly, Erik Schmidt, Marilyn Silverstone, and Lodro Palmo), we read that this sage who lived in the 1800s was asked by some people: “Who is your teacher?”

He replies in song:
“In the beginning I took the teacher as teacher,
In the middle I took the scriptures as teacher,
In the end I took my own mind as teacher.”

In one of the profound conversations recorded in “Be As You Are: The Teachings of Ramana Maharshi”, we listen to the sage —  “the Guru is always within you.”

Peace 😊
