“….love listens. It is its first task to listen.”

In Chapter 10 of the 1872 “The Poet at the Breakfast Table”, we read Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., the poet, and physician:

“It is the province of knowledge to speak and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.”

Writing about love and justice in personal relations, the theologian Paul Tillich, teaches us (“Love, Power, and Justice: Ontological Analyses and Ethical Applications”) that “love listens.” Indeed, “It is its first task to listen.”

Addressing the 2019 graduates at the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts, the actress Kristen Bell says that “when you listen — when you really listen to people, when you listen as fiercely as you want to be heard, when you respect the idea that you are sharing the earth with other humans, when you lead with your nice foot forward, you’ll win every time.”

She goes on. “It might not be today, it might not be tomorrow, but it comes back to you when you need it.”

Peace 😊
